How We Move Pianos Safely
Moving a piano safely requires specialized equipment, careful planning, and experience. Before each move, we evaluate the piano’s size and weight, stairs, doorways, flooring, terrain, and other access conditions so we can choose the safest moving method. Depending on the situation, our crews may use piano boards, ramps, all-terrain dollies, stair-climbing equipment, protective padding, floor coverings, and other specialized tools.
All-Terrain Piano Moving for Grass, Gravel & Uneven Ground
Not every piano move involves smooth, level pavement. Some properties have long grass, gravel or dirt paths, hills, uneven ground, or other difficult terrain between the building and our moving vehicle. Luna’s uses specialized all-terrain piano dollies and, when necessary, wooden planks to create a safer and more stable path for transporting the piano.
We use two different types of all-terrain dollies depending on the conditions:
Narrow Smooth-Wheel All-Terrain Dolly: Best for relatively level grass, dirt, gravel, and other outdoor surfaces. The smooth tires help prevent rocks and debris from becoming lodged in the tire tread before the piano enters a home, helping protect interior flooring.
Wide-Base All-Terrain Dolly: Used when the ground is more uneven or unstable. Its wider stance provides additional stability and helps reduce the chance of the piano leaning or tipping from side to side. Once we reach concrete or smooth indoor flooring, we transfer the piano onto a standard piano dolly when appropriate.
For especially difficult terrain, our crew may also use heavy-duty wooden planks to bridge soft, uneven, or unstable areas. We evaluate each property and choose the equipment and moving method that provides the safest route for the piano, our movers, and the customer’s property.

Piano Moving Up & Down Stairs
Moving a piano through stairs can be a challenge. Luna's Piano Moving offers a few moving options when carrying a piano up or down a flight of stairs.
Moving a piano up or down stairs requires experience, specialized equipment, and careful planning. Before beginning a stair move, our team evaluates the piano’s size and weight, staircase width, landings, turns, ceiling clearance, number of steps, and surrounding surfaces. Based on those conditions, we choose the safest method for the piano, the property, and our moving crew.
There is no single method that works for every staircase. Depending on the piano and access conditions, we may carry the piano by hand, use specialized ramps, piano boards or sleds, an appliance dolly for certain smaller uprights, or an electric stair-climbing dolly. Our crews determine the appropriate method on-site based on the individual move.
Method 1: Carrying/Lifting by Hand
Carrying a piano by hand is the most labor-intensive stair-moving method, but certain properties leave no safer alternative. Tight landings, low ceilings, narrow staircases, sharp turns, or limited clearance can prevent us from using ramps or stair-climbing equipment. In these situations, our crew carefully plans the move and uses the appropriate number of experienced movers to safely control the piano throughout the staircase.
Very large instruments can also limit our equipment options. For example, a 9-foot concert grand may be too long and heavy to balance safely on a stair-climbing dolly. Every piano and staircase is different, so our crew determines the safest method based on the piano’s size, weight, and the access conditions at the property.

Method 2: Ramps
Ramps are one of our most commonly used methods for moving pianos over stairs. Because staircases vary in height, length, and layout, we carry multiple ramps in different sizes so we can choose the safest setup for each property. When conditions allow, a ramp lets us bridge over the steps and create a smoother, more controlled path for the piano.
Ramps are not appropriate for every staircase. The number of steps, available landing space, ceiling clearance, slope, and surrounding obstacles all affect whether a ramp can be used safely. For longer or more complex staircases, our crew may use multiple ramps or choose another moving method altogether.

Method 3: Piano Boards
Another method we use for stair moves is carefully sliding the piano on a piano board or specialized moving sled. Before using this method, we protect the staircase with heavy-duty floor runners and/or thick moving blankets to help prevent scratches, dents, and other damage to the steps and surrounding surfaces.
Depending on the piano, staircase, and available clearance, our crew may use a traditional piano board or a heavy-duty moving sled. Each option has advantages in different situations, so our movers evaluate the conditions on-site and choose the method that provides the safest and most controlled way to move the piano.

How We Move Full Concert Grand Pianos
Full concert grand pianos are among the largest and heaviest pianos we move, and they require careful planning, specialized equipment, and an experienced crew. The concert grand shown below weighed approximately 1,400 pounds and required several pieces of specialized equipment, including a piano board, piano board stands, piano tilter, all-terrain piano dolly, multiple ramps, and a low-profile trailer.
Our moving process is designed to reduce unnecessary lifting, maintain control of the piano throughout the move, and help protect both the instrument and our movers. The photos and video below show the step-by-step process we use to prepare, tilt, secure, transport, and load a full concert grand piano.
Step 1: Inspect & Protect the Concert Grand Piano
Before moving a concert grand piano, we inspect the instrument for any existing damage and document its condition with photos. This helps protect both the customer and our moving crew by creating a clear record of the piano’s condition before the move begins.
After the inspection, we carefully protect the piano with thick, heavy-duty moving blankets designed for large and delicate items. We use generous padding around the cabinet and other vulnerable surfaces before any tilting, lifting, or loading takes place. Our goal is to protect the piano, the property, and our movers throughout every stage of the move.
Step 2: Remove the Lyre & Position the Piano Tilter
After removing the lyre and pedals, we position our specialized piano tilter to prepare the concert grand for placement onto the piano board. The tilter allows us to lower the piano slowly and in a controlled manner rather than relying entirely on manual lifting and balancing.
Without proper control during this step, the piano can shift or slip as it is lowered, potentially damaging the corner of the cabinet when it contacts the piano board. We frequently see older grand pianos with damage in this area, which is one reason we inspect and document the piano before beginning the move.
The piano tilter also allows us to make adjustments during the process. If the piano board is not positioned correctly, we can carefully roll the piano back, reposition the board, and continue the tilt. This provides our crew with greater control when handling very large and heavy grand pianos.
Step 3: Tilt the Concert Grand onto the Piano Board & Secure It
Using the piano tilter, we carefully lower the concert grand onto the piano board in a slow and controlled motion. In the example shown below, the 9'2", approximately 1,400-pound concert grand player piano is positioned on the piano board and prepared for placement onto our all-terrain piano dolly using our piano board support blocks.
The exact setup can vary depending on the move. In some situations, the piano board is positioned on stands or a dolly so the piano can be transported immediately after it is secured. In other situations, such as when a piano only needs to be repositioned or stored inside a home, the piano may be placed directly onto the board without a dolly underneath.
Once the piano is properly positioned, we secure it to the piano board with heavy-duty straps before moving it to the next stage of the process.
Step 4: Remove the Tilter & Transfer the Piano to the All-Terrain Dolly
Once the concert grand is securely strapped to the piano board, we remove the piano tilter and carefully transfer the piano onto our all-terrain piano dolly. In the move shown below, the piano weighed approximately 1,400 pounds, so maintaining stability and control throughout the transfer was especially important.
Before moving the piano, our crew evaluates the route ahead, including flooring, turns, doorways, elevation changes, and any stairs or ramps. We bring the equipment needed for the entire route before beginning so we can move the piano slowly and safely without unnecessary lifting or last-minute improvisation.
Step 5: Move the Concert Grand Down the Ramp
In this move, four steps separated the hallway from the garage, so we used our 10-foot fiberglass ramp to create a smoother path for the approximately 1,400-pound concert grand. Before descending the ramp, our crew checked the angle, clearance, footing, and surrounding area to make sure the piano could be moved safely and under control.
With a piano this large and heavy, we move slowly and deliberately while maintaining control from multiple positions. The ramp allows us to bypass the individual steps and reduce unnecessary lifting while guiding the piano safely down to the garage level.
6: Load & Secure the Concert Grand for Transport
After descending the ramp, the concert grand was carefully moved approximately 40 feet to our transport vehicle. Once loaded, we secured the piano using heavy-duty tie-downs and additional protective padding to help prevent movement, rubbing, or contact with surrounding equipment during transport.
We often use multiple layers of padding around large and valuable pianos because our goal is to deliver each instrument in the same condition it was in before the move. Before leaving the pickup location, our crew checks the piano, straps, padding, and securement points to make sure everything is properly positioned for transport.
