How We Protect Your Piano in Storage
Before placing a piano into storage, our team prepares and protects it based on the piano type and condition. We use professional moving blankets, piano boards, and other appropriate equipment to help protect the cabinet, finish, legs, pedals, and other vulnerable components.
Grand pianos may be secured on a piano board when appropriate, while upright pianos are positioned and protected according to their size and construction. Each piano is stored in a stable location where it can remain protected until the customer is ready for pickup, delivery, or release.
When the storage period ends, Luna’s can also arrange professional delivery of the piano to its next destination, giving customers one company for pickup, storage, and final delivery.
How Improper Storage Can Damage a Piano
A piano is made from wood, metal, felt, adhesives, strings, and thousands of moving parts that can react to changes in temperature and humidity. Storing a piano in a garage, shed, non-climate-controlled storage unit, or other unstable environment can expose it to heat, cold, moisture, dryness, dust, and rapid temperature changes.
Over time, these conditions can cause the piano’s wooden components to expand, contract, warp, or crack. The soundboard, pinblock, bridges, action parts, keys, finish, and other components can all be affected.
Excess humidity may lead to swelling, sticking keys, corrosion, rust, mold, and deterioration of felt or other internal materials. Extremely dry conditions can cause wood to shrink or crack and may affect tuning stability and structural components.
Rapid temperature and humidity changes can also cause a piano to go out of tune more frequently and may contribute to long-term damage that is difficult or expensive to repair.
For these reasons, Luna’s Piano Moving & Storage keeps stored pianos in a climate-controlled environment designed to reduce extreme temperature and humidity fluctuations while the piano is in our care.
How Much Does Piano Storage Cost?
Piano storage pricing generally has three parts: pickup, monthly storage, and return or release.
Pickup Cost:
The cost to pick up your piano depends on the type and size of the piano, the pickup location, and the access conditions. Stairs, elevators, long carries, difficult terrain, and other access challenges can affect the price.
Storage Cost:
Monthly storage rates are based primarily on the size of the piano and the length of time it will be stored. A small spinet upright requires much less storage space than a large grand or concert grand piano. Discounted rates may be available for customers who prepay for long-term storage. Return Delivery Cost:
When you are ready for your piano, the delivery cost will depend on the destination, distance, piano type, stairs, and other access conditions. If the piano is being returned to the original pickup location and the conditions have not changed, the return cost may be lower than the original pickup.
Storing a Piano in a Garage or Self-Storage Unit?
If you plan to store your piano in your own storage unit or garage, the environment is just as important as the protective materials. We strongly recommend a clean, dry, climate-controlled space that protects the piano from excessive heat, cold, humidity, moisture, dust, and sudden temperature changes.
In addition to a suitable environment, the piano should be properly padded, secured, and supported during storage. The equipment commonly needed depends on whether you are storing an upright, organ, grand, or square grand piano.

Piano Storage for Local and Long-Distance Moves
Most of our piano storage customers are located in Los Angeles County and Orange County and simply need a safe, climate-controlled place to keep their piano. Whether you are remodeling, moving locally, waiting for a new home to be ready, clearing space temporarily, or just need additional time before deciding where your piano will go, Luna’s Piano Moving & Storage can pick up your piano, store it, and deliver it when you are ready.
We can also coordinate piano storage with long-distance piano moving to or from Los Angeles. This can be especially helpful when your moving dates and your piano delivery dates do not line up.
If you are moving to Los Angeles, we may be able to pick up your piano along one of our long-distance service routes and transport it to our Los Angeles storage facility, where it can remain until you are ready to receive it.
If your piano is already in the Los Angeles or Orange County area and will eventually be moving out of the area, we can pick it up locally and place it into storage until you are ready for delivery or until one of our scheduled long-distance trips covers your route.
There is no requirement to use our long-distance moving service in order to store a piano with us. Local piano storage is available as a standalone service. Long-distance coordination is simply an additional option for customers whose piano is eventually traveling to or from the Los Angeles area.

Yes. We can pick up your piano from your home, business, school, church, studio, or other location, transport it to storage, and deliver it when you are ready. This allows you to use one company for pickup, storage, and final delivery.

Yes. We store upright pianos, baby grand pianos, grand pianos, concert grands, organs, antique pianos, and other specialty instruments. Grand pianos are prepared and supported using equipment appropriate for their size and construction before being placed into storage.
Can I store my piano while I am moving long distance?
Yes. We can coordinate piano storage with certain long-distance piano moves to or from Los Angeles. If your moving dates do not line up, we may be able to pick up your piano and store it until your new home is ready, your delivery date is finalized, or our next scheduled trip covers your route.
If your piano is already in Los Angeles or Orange County, we can also store it locally until you are ready for long-distance delivery.
Do I have to use your long-distance moving service to store my piano?
No. Local piano storage is available as a standalone service. Most of our storage customers are located in Los Angeles County and Orange County and simply need a secure place to store their piano locally.
Long-distance moving is an additional option for customers whose piano will eventually be moving to or from the Los Angeles area.
Can I store a piano in a garage or regular self-storage unit?
You can, but it is usually not ideal unless the space is clean, dry, secure, and protected from major temperature and humidity changes. Garages and standard storage units can become very hot, cold, or humid depending on the season, which may affect the piano’s wood, finish, action, strings, and tuning stability.
If you must use a self-storage unit, a climate-controlled unit is generally the better option.
Should a piano be covered while it is in storage?
Yes. A piano should be properly protected from dust, dirt, scratches, and accidental contact while it is stored. We use appropriate moving blankets and protective materials depending on the type and condition of the piano.
Will my piano need to be tuned after storage?
Possibly. Moving a piano and placing it in a different environment can affect its tuning. Even with climate-controlled storage, a piano may need time to acclimate after delivery. Many piano technicians recommend allowing the piano to settle into its new environment before scheduling a tuning.
